Cold war
Joseph Stalin came to power in the Soviet Union after the death of Vladimir Lenin. The communist government controlled every aspect of Soviet life. Russian people that did not support the Soviet government were arrested. Russian citizens that Stalin did not trust were arrested. Many Russian prisoners were sent to work in slave labor camps in Siberia. The Cold War was between the members of NATO, who were against communism, and the members of The Warsaw Pact nations, who believed in communism. The war stayed "cold" because neither side wanted to start an actual war. The people had no incentive to work hard and they were uneducated on how free markets worked. The Soviet Union could not sustain the communist-style government. The Cold War lasted for 40 years.
